St Nicolas' Renewal10 November 2002
St. Nicolas Renewal - Progress ReportThe cupola is in place, but the scaffolding remains for installation of ventilation and making the roof apex water-tight. The ceiling is looking very nice indeed, but more structural work was needed to compensate for movement in the frame of the church. Work on the ceiling is also taking longer than expected because of the difficult nature of the carpentry (no two angles are the same). Contracts have been let for underfloor heating and for the windows - the latter may be installed before Christmas. The PCC has approved an outline design for the central pendant light fitting and we are waiting for detailed designs. The carpet style and colour has been chosen by a sub-committee in consultation with the architect. While working on the wall behind the altar the builders found that the plaster was not attached to the wall and was in danger of collapse. It has now been stripped off and the whole wall will be replastered. Due to the various problems encountered the cost has risen towards £195,000 and the completion date has retreated to the end of January 2003, but we think that the major problems are now behind us.
