What's under the altar ?

Under the floor at St Nicolas' are hot water pipes to provide heating.   Between the battens are insulating blocks above which are the pipes which will carry the heat.   Throughout the centre of the church floor the pipes are held in place by metal sheets (silver in the picture) which will help to distribute the heat evenly.   Some floor boards are already in place.  Because the floor is now higher than before, a small ramp is in place at the entrance. This picture shows the east side of the church which will be occupied by the altar.

The first picture above shows a view of the pipes emerging from the wall where the choir will sing.  The pipes are alternately supply and return to various regions of the church floor.  The second picture shows the pipes looping at the west side of the church (entrance side).  Typically a pipe will traverse the church eight times before returning.

In the vestry the nine sets of pipes come together and a shiny, new boiler is already in place waiting to be connected.

Above all of this; the roof scaffold has been removed.
