Crucifixion breathes life into a story that everybody knows. What is striking is the sheer power of the original medieval poetry – Jesus challenging the audience from the cross to acknowledge that he is suffering for them, and the poignant pain and anguish of Mary’s lament for her dying child. These are not the characters preserved in the cold marble of a pieta or elegant stained glass window, but living, suffering human beings.
