The Education & Nurture Sub-Committee

WHAT IS THE EDUCATION & NURTURE SUB-COMMITTEE?

Our Mission Statement reads:

To encourage and help all members of the church community:
      to grow in understanding of the Good News and the riches of the Christian Life;
      to share and value one another's experiences;
to be more confident in living their faith.

DOES IT AFFECT ME? I'VE BEEN A COMMITTED CHRISTIAN FOR AGES.

Are you puzzled about some of the Bible readings in our services?
Do you secretly wonder if you are alone in some of your beliefs and doubts?
Do you feel inadequate when it comes to sharing your faith with outsiders?

If you answered 'Yes' to any of these questions, then it would be worth looking out for learning opportunities that might suit you.

SO MANY COMMITTEES!   HOW DOES THIS ONE FIT IN?

It was set up by the PCC to look after this part of church life. It always includes one or two PCC members, we report to the PCC, and need their approval for major proposals.

There is plenty of cooperation between the different sub-committees of the PCC; we often work with Mission & Outreach, Worship or Parish Events.

WHO ARE THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS?

Currently (January 2003) the committee consists of
Marion Beagley, Linda Biggs, Margaret Compton, Fr Michael Cozens, Beryl Elliott and Sue Read.
We are free to co-opt further members, and are always on the lookout for new recruits. If you are excited by learning, or are good at publicity, or a whizz on the internet, we could use you.

WHAT DOES THE EDUCATION & NURTURE SUB-COMMITTEE DO?

Last year our agenda included:

  • Sunday Club and Sunday School
  • Rockers
  • Synergy and Elevate
  • Preparation for Confirmation and for Admission to Communion
  • Children's Activity Days
  • Youth Residential weekend
  • Quiet Day
  • Sidmouth Weekend
  • Home Bible Groups
  • Lent sermons, bookstall
  • 'Springboard'
  • Summer school 'Out of the Stained Glass Window'
  • Advent Course 'A Song in Season'
  • Learning opportunities outside the parish
  • Gospels and other material on tape

Luckily, we do not have to do it all ourselves, but we do have to find 'a (wo)man who can'. With so many activities, it is important not to lose the wood for the trees. We keep in mind our main aim - to help people in their journey towards God.

CAN I HAVE ANY INFLUENCE?

We need your comments and suggestions, or we can only guess what would be useful and practical. Please let us know what have you found most useful in recent years? what would you like us to provide? what day, time, place is best for people like you?

We live in a fast-changing world, and activities which were popular ten years ago may not be appropriate now. There is always room in the calendar to try out a new idea.

HOW DO I CONTACT YOU?

Speak to any of us, in person or by phone, or write if you would rather, the Parish Office, or e-mail us, again via the office, at adminprestbury.net . Or why not send a letter to the magazine editor, and start a discussion with other readers?

Most of all, do talk to us. We are here for you.

Beryl Elliott
