SERVICES ON 1 JANUARY
Please note that the Eucharist on Friday 1 January at St Mary’s will be at 9.30am and not the usual 8am. There is NO SERVICE AT ALL SAINTS’.

OCCASIONAL YOUTH WORK
We have a great team of volunteers working with young people in our various groups. Occasionally volunteers are not able to attend sessions and we need to find other leaders at short notice to help the groups to run. If you would be interested in being on a list of ‘occasional’ volunteers, who would just be contacted if a group needed another person in order to run – please do get in touch with Andy Macauly (520534) or with Fr David.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE POLICE CHOIR CONCERT
Marion would like to thank all those who supported the Gloucestershire Police Choir Concert last Friday. We raised the fantastic sum of £926.35 towards the Kenya Projects that the Revd. Maz Allen from the URC church supports. Grateful thanks to all who helped make this so successful.  Marion Beagley

ALPHA GROUPS come to an end this week. It has been a good experience for all those involved, and they are in the process of thinking about how they would like to proceed, perhaps continuing to meet in the Spring for an "After-Alpha" course. Thank you to all those who have been supporting Alpha in prayer as well as in practical ways. We hope to have some experiences to share with everyone soon. Fr Daniel

DAY OF PRAYER FOR VICKY DUNN
Vicky Dunn (Foundation Governor at St Mary's Infants' School and a regular member of Celebrate! and Rockers) was involved in a serious car accident just over a month ago.  Wednesday 16 December will be a day of prayer for Vicky, her husband Alan and their three children. St Mary's will be open as usual, and prayers will be said for Vicky and her family at the 7.30pm Eucharist.

We welcome the Revd Dr Sandra Miller (Diocesan Children’s Officer) to St Nicolas’ Patronal today. At 11am, after refreshments, there will be a short organ recital given by Colin Smith, former organist at St Nicolas’. All are welcome.

CHRISTINGLE
The Christingle Service will be held at St Mary's today, 6 December at 4pm.  As always, it promises to be a wonderful occasion, especially for the children, as they bring donations for the Children's Society, and receive a Christingle Orange by way of thanks.  Do come if you can - and bring the whole family!

THE CHRISTMAS STORY: THE MESSAGE IN THE CARDS   
Thursday 10 December at  7.30pm at  St Nicolas’. Please join us for this illustrated Advent talk in which Vivian Northcote will explore aspects of the real meaning of Christmas.  The evening will be informal; coffee and biscuits available. Patricia Downes

LADIES MEAL AT MANGO
Can all ladies attending the meal next Saturday evening please meet at the restaurant for 6.30pm.  The cost of the meal is £15 per head with all  drinks to be paid for separately.

CONCERT – SATURDAY 5 DECEMBER
'Immanuel's Ground Choir' at All Saints’.
Based in Warwickshire, this is a choir performing in the 18th and early 19th century West Gallery Tradition. There will be singing and playing of traditional instruments with some audience participation, as this will be a celebration of Christmas.

MINISTRY LEADERSHIP TEAM
The calling-out process for new Team members is still ongoing but taking longer than anticipated. Please continue to keep this in your prayers.

THE REAL CHRISTMAS – At St Mary’s on Saturday 5 December 2pm – 5pm.
Mulled wine and Christmas teas, children’s activities, carol singing, Christingle orange making, ‘Let the Children Live’ Christmas quiz challenge, and much more.
It will be a relaxing family afternoon, not just another bazaar! The big Christmas tree will also be decorated. Drop in for a break and a chat.

JOURNEY WITH JESUS
Hosts are again sought from each church for the figures of the Holy Family during Advent. The figures are passed from home to home, giving an opportunity for shared hospitality, and reminding us that Christ does not just bring us to God but to one another. GLOUCESTERSHIRE POLICE CHOIR CONCERT
The choir have agreed to perform a Christmas Concert, in St Andrews Church, Montpellier, on Friday 11 December at 7.30pm. All proceeds will go to the project that Revd Maz Allen is involved with in Kenya. Tickets are £6 each or £5 for concessions and available from Marion Beagley  or David Axton. St Nicolas’ Patronal will be celebrated at the 9.30am service on Sunday 6 December.

JOURNEY WITH JESUS
Hosts are again sought from each church for the figures of the Holy Family during Advent. The figures are passed from home to home, giving an opportunity for shared hospitality, and reminding us that Christ does not just bring us to God but to one another. Saturday 21 November 1030-1200, URC, Deep Street, to raise funds for props for the Open the Book teams at local schools. Each week members of St Nicholas’, St Mary's, St Michael's, Highbury Congregational and Prestbury URC go into school to tell a bible story using Open the Book material. To help the stories come alive, visual aids and props are needed, so please come and help us to raise some money for this important mission work. At 3.30pm in St Mary’s we will be holding our annual Memorial Service for those who have been bereaved during the past year.  This is a service of readings, prayers and music, during which all those attending are invited to light a candle as they remember a loved one.  All those who have died during the past year will be commemorated by name during the service.  All are welcome to attend, even if you have not received an invitation.  There will not be a service at 6.30pm in St Mary’s.

RIDE AND STRIDE – This sponsored event held annually in September was blessed with a warm pleasant day. Participants were able to visit a number of churches in our locality. NEXT SUNDAY - 18 OCTOBER
We will be keeping this as St Luke’s day (the patron saint of physicians).  At St Nicolas’ the Archdeacon of Cheltenham will preside and preach at the 9.30am Sung Eucharist.  At 6.30pm in All Saints’ there will be a Healing Service to which all are welcome.  There will not be a service in St Mary’s at 6.30pm.

ALPHA UPDATE
Just under thirty of us sat down to share the Alpha Supper last Monday: a first class meal and a team to match! Thank you to all those who came to set up and welcome our guests. Nearly all of them (eleven so far) have decided to do the course, which is an excellent result. Please keep praying for the groups as they explore the meaning of life and faith over the following weeks. MUSIC MATTERS
The choir is back from a well deserved summer break and all services are again fully choral.
There will be an organ recital in All Saints by John McElroy on Saturday 12 September at 7.30pm. £7. Please support one of our 'Home Team'.
The final concert in our series this year will be on Saturday 26 September at 7.30pm. It features the Malvern Hills District Brass Band conduced by John Swindells, and Cameron Luke at the organ.

A SPECIAL WELCOME TO BISHOP JOHN, who is presiding and preaching today at St Mary's Parish Mass (11am) celebrating the birth of Mary the mother of Jesus the Christ.

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS organised by English Heritage nationally. St Mary’s will be open to the public Thursday 10 Sept – Sunday 13 Sept, 2pm – 5pm as part of this initiative. The theme is “The way we travelled”, with old maps, text & pictures of ancient paths, trams, buses, cycles, stage coaches etc. The tower will be open – Friday 1530 – 1700, Saturday 1430 - 1600. Passion Play photos by Neil Jones will be on display in the Good Shepherd chapel. David Lyle has produced a guided historic walk of the village. Teas will be served each day, and admission is free.

FRIENDS OF ST MARY’S
The aim of the friends of St Mary’s is to involve more village support in maintaining St Mary’s Church and churchyard. An information stand will be included at the heritage open day exhibition for this reason. Representatives will be there to answer enquiries

Raymond has had the Roll of Honour reframed and placed it on the windowsill with an arrangement of poppies; the Book of Remembrance is in the case below. Together with a small artwork on the windowsill, the whole makes a thoughtful memorial area. Thank you Raymond.

SUNDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER   In Prestbury we will be keeping this day as the Birthday of Mary – St Mary’s Patronal Festival.  At 11am in St Mary’s the Bishop of Tewkesbury will preside and preach.  This year we are having services at all the normal times in the other churches of the Team, but anyone is of course very welcome to join the congregation at St Mary’s on their special day.

ORDINATION THANKS Thank you to all who supported me at the Ordination in June - it was lovely to see so many familiar faces. A special thank you for the gift of two stoles. SOUL SURIVOR

OUTING TO TETBURY AND W.I. TEA
Tempo is organising a half day coach trip to Tetbury on August 26.  If anyone from across the benefice would like to join this outing, please contact Peter Warwick. The cost is £10 inclusive of travel and tea provided by Avening Women's Institute.

Following guidelines issued by the Archbishops, with immediate effect and for the duration of the swine flu pandemic, the chalice will not be administered to the congregation at any of our services. Administration of the Host to communicants will be into the hands only. The presiding priest will use antiseptic hand gel prior to handling the elements.
